A new museum project will reveal the memory, evolution and identity of a key town on Andorra’s border

Agreement for the new historical exhibition in Pas de la Casa

Pas de la Casa is known for many things: its lively shopping scene, its close relationship with France, snow, skiing, the constant flow of visitors and its privileged border location. Behind that active commercial image, however, lies a local history, a shared memory and an evolution that explain how this part of Encamp became one of Andorra’s most distinctive places.

That history will now have a home of its own. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Comú d’Encamp have signed a collaboration agreement to create a permanent exhibition in Pas de la Casa. Its purpose is to highlight the town’s historical memory and offer residents and visitors a clear, visual and accessible way to understand its development.

The exhibition will be housed in the Pas de la Casa tourist office, an especially suitable location because of its direct contact with people arriving in town. It will be more than a tourist information point: it will also be somewhere to pause, look back and gain a better understanding of the area.

The project is intended to operate as an interpretation centre for the history of Pas de la Casa. Rather than simply displaying old photographs and documents, it will explain how the town has changed over time, its role within the parish of Encamp and the extent to which its location has shaped its development.

Under the agreement, the Cultural Heritage Department will define the exhibition’s historical narrative and contribute public-domain material from the National Archive and National Library. The Comú d’Encamp will be responsible for producing the project, preparing the exhibition space and maintaining the installation.

The exhibition will also feature audiovisual content, including photographs and videos. These resources will help show the transformation of Pas de la Casa, from its origins and growth as a mountain settlement to its consolidation as a meeting point between Andorra, France and the Pyrenees.

For visitors, the new space will offer a different way to discover Pas de la Casa. Beyond shopping, snow and restaurants, it will explain the town’s character and its importance within the country. For residents, it will have emotional value too: their own experience, roots and collective memory will receive public recognition.

Pas de la Casa has grown with a strong identity. Its history is connected to the border, trade, tourism, the mountains and the adaptability of those who live and work there. Creating a permanent space devoted to that memory is therefore more than a cultural initiative; it also strengthens the relationship between the town, its residents and the people who visit each year.

With this exhibition, Pas de la Casa adds a new attraction to its offering—quiet, cultural and approachable, inviting people to see the area from another perspective. Knowing a place is not only about walking its streets or using its services; it is also about understanding how it became what it is today.
